Lesson 26: Spring & Pigeon

What is this lesson about?

The theme of this class will be Spring and Pigeon. We will do different types of pigeon poses – standing, on the mat, with hammock and inverted. The pigeon poses are fun and challenging stretching yoga pose that kids of all ages benefit from. For example, the inverted pigeon allows traction of the spine, which is great for development and self-regulation. The chest is “puffed” like a pigeon, which is great for allowing good diaphragmatic movement and deep breathing and helps with postural development. But I promise you, the kids don’t do inverted pigeon for these benefits. They do it because it’s fun, and they feel like circus stars!

We will learn new fun dynamic inversion A Bird Glides on the Wind that looks very complicate, but if you will follow the video tutorial instructions, you will discover that it can be done by 6 years old kids easily.

We will practice a lot of breathing exercises, including practicing Flower and Candle Breathing and new exercise with a kerchief. The kerchief exercise teaches to control the breath, uses movement to tell a story and encourages mindful movement.

As alway we will also continue practicing exercises from the previous lessons. You may notice that the last lessons are loaded with more exercises comparing to the beginner’s lessons. This is because  the kids already skilled and have experience of working with the hammock independently. So, you don’t need to assist and support the kids performing exercises one by one. Of course, always there are kids that need support. If you see that the group is not advanced enough and you don’t have time to perform all the exercises just skip some practicing exercises from the previous lessons.

We will sum up this lesson with Spring Renewal Relaxation written by Mellisa Dormoy of ShambalaKids. The meditation helps children and teens relieve stress and anxiety, improve self-esteem, feel great (mind, body, and spirit) and develop a positive mental attitude at school and at home.
